As the future of long-haul trucking continues to embrace zero emission vehicles, understanding the world of ZEV incentives becomes paramount for fleet operators. These incentives can prove to be a game-changer in making zero emission trucks not only environmentally friendly but also economically viable. Let's delve into the essential steps and key incentives that Papé Kenworth supports as we lead the charge in the electrification and ZEV market.
What’s First?

Federal Incentives
The Inflation Reduction Act marks a significant milestone in the availability of commercial ZEV incentives. Commencing in 2023, this act provides a generous tax credit covering up to $40,000 of the purchase price for medium- and heavy-duty zero emission trucks. This financial boost can help make the transition to zero emission trucking a reality for forward-thinking fleet operators.

Following California's Lead
California's Hybrid and Zero Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project (HVIP) is setting a precedent for other states. It offers substantial incentives, ranging up to $120,000 for heavy-duty zero emission trucks and up to $375,000 for zero emission school buses. States like Washington, Oregon, Texas, New York, and New Jersey are making strides in emulating California's success and are progressing toward a greener future for long-haul trucking.
Building the Foundation
Through the Clean Heavy-Duty Vehicles allotment, the Inflation Reduction Act also extends its support to Zero Emission Vehicle Supply Equipment (ZEVSE) by allocating funds for charging stations, with the grant opportunity set to launch in late 2023. In addition, the California Energy Commission’s EnergIIZE program enables businesses to secure up to $500,000 for electric charging infrastructure and $2,000,000 for hydrogen infrastructure to be able to effectively charge their medium- and heavy-duty commercial fleets. By collaborating with utilities, fleet operators can further enhance their ZEV infrastructure, with partial funding provided for essential upgrades like transformers, meters, and zero emission panels. Engaging utilities early in the process can streamline the transition to zero emission trucks and make the entire process more efficient.
Partnerships
At Pape Kenworth, we are committed to supporting our customers in every way possible. That's why we are excited to announce PACCAR's extension of its zero-emission leadership, bringing you a wide range of PACCAR chargers available through PACCAR Parts. We understand that efficient and reliable battery charging solutions are crucial for our drivers, which is why we have formed a strong partnership with EnTech Solutions and Schneider zero emission to provide comprehensive and cutting-edge charging options.
So, What’s Next?
The Road Ahead: Public Charging Stations
For fleet operators, evaluating the need and utilizing public charging stations is a strategic move. Federal funding administered through the Department of Energy’s Vehicle Technologies Office and Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office has committed substantial resources across seven projects to create an innovative nationwide public charging infrastructure in the coming years. As these charging stations become operational, they will extend the charging network's reach, supporting medium and heavy-duty zero-emission semi-trucks across 23 states.
Navigating the Financial Options
Understanding the distinctions between ZEV grants and vouchers is crucial in making informed decisions. Federal grants typically require a detailed application process, while state-administered vouchers are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Grants often focus on emerging technologies, but significant opportunities for zero emission trucks still exist. As the market matures, off-highway applications and hydrogen-powered vehicles are also emerging as potential beneficiaries of these incentives.
Driving To Zero Emissions
With the support of a robust array of ZEV incentives, fleet operators can now turn their vision of zero emission trucks into a tangible reality. Papé Kenworth is at the forefront of driving electrification in the trucking industry, offering comprehensive guidance and customized solutions to harness these incentives effectively. By embracing sustainable technology and seizing the available incentives, the long-haul trucking sector can accelerate its journey toward a cleaner, greener, and more prosperous future.
